Perhaps I should have titled it "Has *Broadway* jumped the shark?".

I'm certainly working on branching out. Granted, Broadway is a nice place to make a killing -- the "Wicked" franchise makes nearly $8M per week worldwide -- but it's a completely broken business model that requires high-rollers bored with roulette to blow their money on something else.

Not to mention, Broadway is fairly square. Of course, the moral to all of this might be that I'm in exactly the right place then. :)

so, here is a question: what is the definition of musical theatre? At what point does something go from being merely theatre to being musical theatre? and likewise, at what point does something very musical like a rock concert go from being just a bunch of songs to being 'musical theatre'? Along those same veins: when does a musical become an opera?
was 'the man who laughs' a musical? it had music, live music even, nobody sang, and it seemed so much cooler (in idea if not in production) than most musicals.
I guess the point i am getting at is this: (and i think you have mentioned this previously) the 'musical' was defined (it seems to me) in the 70s and 80s. (oh there were musical-like productions before then, but it seems that in the 70s and 80s the musical became a 'thing' in and of itself.) SO i guess the problem i have is that the 'musical' is a very narrow field. and it is unfortunately tied with the 80s and big band hair (it seems) and so what needs to happen is that you guys need to start writing theatre that has music involved in it, and abandon the 'musical' (even if just in name) because i think you have nailed it: the musical has jumped the shark.
